Architecture is never merely shelter. Across the African continent, the built environment has always been a carrier of meaning as a physical expression of who communities are, what they hold sacred, and how they imagine themselves in relation to the land, the cosmos, and one another. Yet in the rapid churn of contemporary African urbanism, this dimension of architecture, its rootedness in culture, memory, and collective identity, is increasingly at risk of being reduced to surface ornament or erased altogether. 

Session Four of the Nairobi Biennale Architectural Heritage Talks Series turns its attention to the living heart of African architectural heritage: the people, cultures, and memories that give buildings and landscapes their deepest significance. It gathers three voices from distinct but deeply connected disciplines, an architect and cultural anthropologist, a landscape architect specialising in sacred and cultural spaces, and a culture curator and artist, to examine how identity, spirituality, and creative expression shape and are shaped by the spaces Africans build and inhabit.
